On Saturday we celebrated my father's birthday with a lunch with my sister's in-laws and their mothers.
Tradition wants it that any celebration is kicked off with a glass of bubbly.
The starter was a slice of toast with homemade pâté. Since I no longer eat meat, my mum had cooked filets de limande with carrot salad and rice just for me as a starter and main.
Everyone else had chevreuil (deer), green salad, peas and carrots, chanterelles, beans, pears, mashed potatoes, spaetzle and red cabbage. My mum is just the most amazing cook. Never in my life will I be able to produce such a feast.
We moved on to cheese. The two at the top were very runny even after we took them out of the fridge. They don't look great but the main thing is that they were delicious!
As a surprise dessert, my father received this ice cream and sorbet sledge with a sparkling candle from Oberweis. It's one of the prettiest desserts I've seen this year.
As if the sledge wasn't enough... We also ate this chocolate mousse log from Oberweis.
But my favourite was the Christmas log from Pâtisserie Simon.
Who is counting calories at Christmas? My mum's friend P (aka Kate) had offered us a Stollen, so we had that too with our Nespressos.
After all this heavy lunch which ended at around 5 pm, it was fairly easy to skip dinner. And by 7 pm I was ready to roll into my bed and sleep.
